Biodiversity loss in England is accelerating. There is recognition from the Government that prompt action is required to address this issue.
The Local Nature Recovery Strategy (LNRS) is a new, England-wide system of spatial strategies that establish priorities and map proposals for specific actions to drive nature’s recovery and provide wider environmental benefits.
The LNRS for Derbyshire provides a blueprint for nature recovery across the county, helping to prioritise where and how to invest, and where action should take place.
Derbyshire County Council were allocated as the ‘Responsible Authority’ for developing and delivering the LNRS across Derbyshire, including Derby City. In accordance with government guidance, a robust governance system was put in place, incorporating local authorities, organisations and stakeholders.
In 2021, a major study into the ‘Natural Capital’ for Derbyshire was undertaken. This study formed the foundation on which the LNRS was developed.
More infoThe LNRS process began with a conference in January 2024, attended by 120 delegates.
The draft strategy and mapping were developed through the remainder of 2024 and early 2025. These were approved by the Advisory Board for public consultation through February/March 2025.
Public consultation and engagement events were a huge success, feeding into subsequent changes to the draft strategy and draft interactive mapping to produce the final versions for publication.
